Two weeks of spring in Japan
Tokyo to Kyoto by slow train, with detours for ramen, mountain temples and far too many convenience-store snacks.

The first thing you notice in Tokyo is how quiet it is. Millions of people, and somehow the loudest sound on the train is the announcement chime.

Kyoto
It rained for three days. It was the best part of the trip.

Practical notes
- Getting around: a regional rail pass paid for itself in four days.
- Where I stayed: small family-run guesthouses wherever I could.
